Privacy Policy
Timeline Visualizer (timelinevisualizer.site) turns your Google Maps Timeline into a journey you can watch and share. Your location history is personal, so we built the site to keep it on your device. This page explains what that means and what data the site does handle.
Your Timeline data
Your Timeline file stays on your device. It is processed in your browser, and we don’t upload it to our servers, store it, or have access to it. We can’t see where you’ve been.
What you choose to share
If you use a share feature, only what you choose to share leaves your device.
Map tiles and third-party services
The map background is loaded from third-party map providers, including OpenStreetMap and CARTO. When the map loads, your browser requests map images from their servers. As a result, these providers can see your IP address and the map areas being requested, as with any website that shows a map. They don’t receive your Timeline file. Their own privacy policies govern how they handle that information.
Information we collect
We don’t ask you to create an account, and we don’t collect your name, email address or location history.
If you email us, we receive your email address and the contents of your message, and we use them only to reply to you. Please don’t attach your Timeline files to emails.
We use Google Analytics to understand how many people visit the site and which pages are used. It may collect your approximate location (country or city), browser and device type, the pages you visit, and how you arrived at the site. This information is collected through cookies and similar technologies and is processed by Google. It does not include your Timeline data, which never leaves your device. You can learn more about how Google handles this data at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites, and you can opt out by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
Cookies
We use cookies from Google Analytics to measure how the site is used. These cookies don’t contain your Timeline data. You can block or delete cookies at any time in your browser settings, though some parts of the site may not work as expected if you do.
I replaced the cookies placeholder with this version, so you can delete both of the old options.
Two things to check before you publish:
- If you use Plausible, Fathom or Matomo, tell me and I’ll rewrite it. Some of these don’t use cookies, which changes the cookies section.
- If your visitors include people in the EU, UK or California, Google Analytics generally requires a cookie consent banner, and this policy alone doesn’t satisfy that. In WordPress you can use a free plugin such as Complianz or CookieYes.
Hosting and logs
Our hosting provider may keep standard server logs, such as IP addresses, browser type and the pages requested, for security and to keep the site running.
Children’s privacy
Timeline Visualizer is not directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from children.
Your rights
Because we don’t hold your Timeline data, there is nothing of it for us to delete or export. To delete your Timeline from the site, clear it from your device or browser. For any personal information we hold, such as emails you’ve sent us, you can write to us at any time to ask for access or deletion.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we’ll post the update on this page and change the “Last updated” date.
